Book an Italian vacation tour package vs. Do it yourself travel

December 21st, 2011

What comes to mind when you think Italian vacation? To me its Roman ruins, amazing food, cheap wine and art. But to others, when you mention an Italian holiday, all that comes to mind is the stress of a hotel rental, buying train tickets, getting ripped off by unscrupulous locals and hours spent waiting in line. But there is a better way. Many folks like to book packaged holiday deals while others enjoy the challenge of stumbling their way through their Italian vacation. But which is for you?

A packaged Italian tour holiday

Booking a package holiday deal might be the answer if you are like my father. To him vacations are opportunities to relax. He will not even consider a hotel rental for less than 100 euro, dinner needs to be in a nice restaurant and he likes to simply not have to worry about making arrangements. For someone who does not like surprises, a package vacation deal might be the best way. You can really get some great deals, especially if you are flying in from overseas and would like to include airfare.

However, if you are like me you crave adventure, challenges. The bumps in the road are what make the whole experience worth it. I enjoy vacations that go off the beaten path. So for me, there is no travel insurance, I always take the do-it-yourself option when planning a holiday. If the apartment I rent in Rome is too small, who cares?  I don’t spend much time there. As long as my rental is near the city, I’m fine. If not, I don’t mind walking some ancient roads to get where I’m going, I’ll enjoy the view.
